Evidence

No study was found that examines pushups performed within five minutes of waking, or any exercise performed within a five-minute post-waking window, in relation to hormonal outcomes. The five-minute threshold appears nowhere in the literature searched.

The cortisol awakening response (CAR) is real and well documented. The Endocrine Reviews paper describes it as the rapid rise in cortisol across the first 30 to 45 minutes after morning awakening. Critically, the CAR is an endogenous, automatic feature of the HPA axis. It occurs in healthy people whether or not they exercise. It is not something a person "activates" by doing pushups, and it is not something most people "never activate."

Testosterone's morning peak is also real and automatic. Clinical guidance advises measuring serum testosterone in the early morning because levels tend to be highest then, and this diurnal pattern becomes less pronounced with age. Again, this is circadian, not exercise-triggered.

On exercise-induced hormone spikes: Kraemer and Ratamess report that testosterone and growth hormone are elevated for roughly 15 to 30 minutes after resistance exercise "providing an adequate stimulus is present," and that the largest responses come from protocols high in volume, moderate to high in intensity, using short rest intervals, and stressing a large muscle mass. A single set of 30 pushups is a low-volume, upper-body-only stimulus, at the weak end of that description. No study was found measuring the hormonal response to 30 bodyweight pushups specifically.

Most importantly, the premise that these acute hormone spikes matter is itself contested. West and Phillips found that exercise-induced changes in systemic hormone concentrations "do not reflect the underlying processes of muscle protein accretion and cannot be used as a proxy marker of muscle hypertrophy." The 2024 ACSM review and the Morton 2018 paper reach the same conclusion: systemic hormonal increases are not related to or predictive of resistance-training-induced gains in muscle or strength.
