The study behind this post is real. It was published in the journal Nutrients in January 2023 and surveyed just over 1,000 young men in China aged 18 to 45. It found that men who reported male pattern hair loss also reported drinking about 1.7 times more sugary beverages per week than men who did not. But the post's headline says these drinks "increase" hair loss and anxiety, and the study cannot show that. It was a one-time online survey where people reported their own drinking habits and their own hair loss, so it cannot tell which came first. The study's own authors listed this as their main limitation, and the post's caption actually admits it even though the image does not. Two further details are missing from the post: once the researchers adjusted for all factors including PTSD, the link was no longer statistically significant, and artificially sweetened zero-sugar drinks showed a similar association, which suggests sugar may not be the real driver. The post also lists three sources that are all the same single study. Energy drinks were never tested on their own.

Evidence
The cited study exists and the PMID is correct. The researchers investigated the association between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and male pattern hair loss (MPHL) in young men, conducting a cross-sectional study from January to April 2022 in mainland China, recruiting people aged 18 to 45 (n = 1951) from 31 provinces using a self-reported online survey.
Among the 1028 participants (27.8 ± 7.2 years) in the final analysis, they found that high SSB consumption is associated with a higher risk of MPHL.
On the "nearly twice" figure: the average weekly SSB intake was 4293 mL in the MPHL group, much higher than that in the normal group (2513 mL) (t = −3.645, p < 0.001) . That is roughly 1.7 times, which secondary coverage described as men with male pattern hair loss consuming almost double the sugar-sweetened beverages of those without the condition .
On causality, the authors and coverage are explicit. The findings are based on correlation, not causation, and further research is needed to confirm the link.
The authors listed as the first and foremost limitation that it was a cross-sectional study relying on self-reported data, so it is difficult to establish the temporal and causal relationships between SSB intake and MPHL, and recall bias may exist.
On anxiety, the study did not test whether sugary drinks cause anxiety. The authors found significant associations between SSB intake frequency and anxiety disorder, and between anxiety disorder and male pattern hair loss. The principal investigator framed this as mediation: "we infer that chronic diseases and anxiety status act as a mediator for the association between sugar drink intake and MPHL." That is a proposed pathway inside a snapshot dataset, not a finding that drinks raise anxiety levels.

Established dermatology literature runs the other way as well, with hair loss itself producing psychological distress. The post presents a bidirectional, cross-sectional correlation as a one-way effect.
- Omitted qualifier, and this is the largest one: in the fully adjusted model the association became non-significant, OR 1.57 with a confidence interval crossing 1. The post presents the finding as settled.
- Subgroup generalization: the sample was 1028 young Chinese men aged 18 to 45 recruited online. "In men" implies all men. Findings are not established as generalizable.
- Marketing of scale: "a large 2023 study." 1028 self-selected online survey respondents is a modest sample, not a large study. The 1951 figure sometimes quoted is the recruitment number, not the analyzed number.
- Composite exposure treated as specific: the headline singles out energy drinks, but the study never isolated energy drinks. Sweet milk and sweet tea and coffee were in the same bucket.
- Source inflation: the post lists three sources, but all three are the same single paper. Two of the three listed titles ("Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption and Male Pattern Hair Loss" and "Male Pattern Hair Loss and Sugary Drink Intake") are not the actual title, which is "The Association between Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Male Pattern Hair Loss in Young Men."
