There is no evidence that taking spirulina and then using a sauna removes microplastics from your body. No study in humans or animals has tested this combination, and no research located has even detected microplastic particles in human sweat. The claim borrows from two unrelated real findings: small, criticised studies from 2011 and 2012 that found plastic-related chemicals like BPA and phthalates in sweat, and laboratory experiments where spirulina interacted with plastic particles in water tanks. Chemicals are not the same as plastic particles, and a water tank is not a human digestive system. The two halves of the claim also do not fit together, because something that binds particles in your gut cannot send them out through your skin. The main known route for the body to clear ingested plastic particles is through stool, not sweat. Saunas have other documented benefits, and spirulina has some limited evidence for arsenic exposure, but neither is a proven microplastic detox.

Evidence
No study was found, in humans or animals, in which microplastic particles were measured in sweat, or in which sauna use reduced microplastic burden in the body. No study was found testing spirulina, alone or with sauna use, for microplastic elimination in a living organism.
What does exist is adjacent and different. The Genuis "Blood, Urine and Sweat" studies from 2011 and 2012 found that BPA and certain phthalate metabolites were detectable in induced sweat, in some cases at concentrations exceeding those in urine or blood. These are plastic-associated chemicals, not plastic particles. The studies were small (20 participants for the BPA study), uncontrolled, and have been criticised for possible contamination of samples from skin surface and collection equipment.
Research on sweat and microplastics from the University of Birmingham runs in the opposite direction to the claim. Their 2023 and 2024 work used synthetic sweat and human skin models to show that brominated flame retardants can leach out of microplastics into sweat and then be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. That is chemicals moving inward from plastic in contact with skin, not particles moving outward from tissue.
On spirulina: the studies cited in wellness content showing spirulina interacting with polyethylene and polypropylene are aquatic-system experiments, where spirulina cultures were exposed to microplastics in water tanks. There is also a body of preclinical animal work and a small number of human studies on spirulina and heavy metals, most notably a controlled trial in arsenic-exposed people in Bangladesh using spirulina extract plus zinc. None of this involves microplastic removal from a human body.
The best-documented human elimination route for ingested microplastics is faecal. Particles above roughly 150 micrometres are generally not absorbed and pass through the gut. A 2025 preliminary human study of a chitosan-based binder reported increased microplastic counts in stool, which is the only human interventional signal found for enhanced microplastic excretion, and it concerns the gut, not sweat.

- Category substitution: the claim treats plastic particles and plastic-derived chemicals as the same thing. Evidence for BPA and phthalates in sweat says nothing about solid particles. This is the single largest distortion.
- Unsupported causal inference: "will cause" asserts a definite mechanism for which no direct measurement exists. Microplastics have not been detected in human sweat in any study located.
- Species and context extrapolation: spirulina clumping plastic particles in an algal water culture is presented as if it were spirulina binding plastic inside a human body. A tank of water is not a gastrointestinal tract, and even if binding occurred in the gut, gut-bound particles would exit in stool, not through skin.
- Mechanistic incoherence: the two halves of the claim do not connect. A gut binder cannot deliver particles to sweat glands. Nothing absorbed and bound in the intestine reaches eccrine sweat ducts. Clinicians quoted in coverage of this trend state that particle size and tissue lodging make sweat mobilisation unlikely and that experimental human evidence is absent.
- Omitted qualifier: the Genuis studies were small, uncontrolled and criticised for contamination, and their authors did not claim meaningful body burden reduction.
- Directional inversion: the most relevant sweat-and-microplastics research shows chemicals leaching from plastic into sweat and then into the body, which is the reverse of the claimed benefit.

- Whether any microplastic or nanoplastic particles are present in human sweat at all has not, as far as located sources show, been directly tested. Absence of measurement is not the same as proof of zero.
- How much of a person's total BPA or phthalate load sauna sweating could realistically remove is unquantified.
- Whether spirulina binds any plastic particles in the human gut has never been tested in vivo.
- The origin of the specific spirulina-plus-sauna protocol could not be traced to any study, clinician, or institution. It appears to be an informal wellness-community construction rather than a claim with an identifiable source.
