It is an umbrella review and meta-meta-analysis, meaning it pooled existing meta-analyses rather than analysing individual trials directly. The authors note their umbrella review included fivefold more meta-analyses (133 systematic reviews), encompassing 25-fold more primary studies (2,724 RCTs) than prior work.
The figures "218 randomized controlled trials" and "more than 14,000 participants" belong to a completely different paper, on a different outcome, in a different journal. Noetel et al., published in the BMJ on 14 February 2024, included any randomised trial with exercise arms for participants meeting clinical cut-offs for major depression, and reported that 218 unique studies with a total of 495 arms and 14,170 participants were included .
