Summary

The study cited here is real. PubMed ID 35785965 is a 2022 Finnish randomized trial in which sedentary middle-aged adults with a cardiovascular risk factor did eight weeks of guideline-based exercise, with one group adding a 15-minute sauna session afterward. That group did show a 2.7 mL/kg/min greater improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness than the exercise-only group, plus lower systolic blood pressure and cholesterol, so the core number in the post is quoted accurately. The problem is the "44% boost in cardiovascular fitness" line, which does not appear in the study and looks like a ratio built from two different comparisons. In plain terms, the extra fitness gain from sauna was roughly 9 to 10 percent on top of the participants' baseline, not 44 percent. The post also leaves out that the trial had only about 15 people per group, that the confidence interval nearly touched zero, that there was no sauna-only comparison group, and that the study measured eight weeks of lab markers rather than anything about longevity. The distortion is in the added interpretive layer: the "44%" figure appears in no version of the study I could find and appears to be a ratio constructed from two non-comparable comparisons, presented in a way that implies a far larger fitness benefit than 2.7 mL/kg/min represents. Confidence is Medium rather than High because I could not trace the origin of the 44% figure, could not confirm whether VO2max was measured or estimated, and could not verify the within-group values from the primary text.

Participants (n = 47) aged 49 ± 9 with low physical activity levels and at least one traditional cardiovascular disease risk factor were randomly assigned 1:1:1 to guideline-based regular exercise plus 15-minute postexercise sauna (EXS), guideline-based regular exercise (EXE), or control (CON) for 8 weeks. The primary outcomes were blood pressure and cardiorespiratory fitness; secondary outcomes included fat mass, total cholesterol and arterial stiffness. Exercise alone produced a greater change in cardiorespiratory fitness than control (+6.2 mL/kg/min; 95% CI, +4.2 to +8.3) and greater fat mass reduction, but no difference in blood pressure versus control.
