On plant sterols: plants predominantly make phytosterols rather than cholesterol. Phytosterols are bioactive compounds found naturally in plant-origin foods with a chemical structure similar to cholesterol, which is found in foods of animal origin , and phytosterols are poorly absorbed, with blood concentrations tending to be low . However, the absolute statement that plants do not produce cholesterol is not biochemically correct: Sonawane and colleagues published "Plant cholesterol biosynthetic pathway overlaps with phytosterol metabolism" in Nature Plants (2016), describing the plant cholesterol biosynthesis pathway . Cholesterol is present in plants as a minor sterol in nutritionally negligible amounts, which is why food databases record plant foods as cholesterol free.
