"GMAIL JUST TURNED ON A DANGEROUS FEATURE, AND 99% OF USERS HAVE NO CLUE. GEMINI CAN NOW ANALYZE YOUR EMAILS, ATTACHMENTS, AND FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS... Nobody asked you first. The feature turned itself on. THAT DATA CAN BE USED TO TRAIN GOOGLE'S AI MODELS. It can also be used to create an advertising profile about you. You never explicitly agreed to either... Spam filtering runs on the same system. Switch this off and more junk lands in your inbox."

Summary

This post mixes a real change with several claims that Google's own documentation contradicts. It is true that in January 2026 Google turned on Gemini-powered features in Gmail by default, including AI summaries and writing tools, and that Gmail's "smart features" setting has long allowed automated processing of email content for things like inbox sorting and Smart Reply. However, that setting is not new. It was introduced years ago, and when a nearly identical warning went viral in November 2025, Google stated it had not changed anyone's settings and does not use Gmail content to train its Gemini model. The security company whose article fueled that wave later corrected it. Google's ads documentation also states it will not scan or read Gmail messages to show ads, which contradicts the advertising profile claim. The post's claim that spam filtering breaks if you untick the box is wrong. Google's documentation says Gmail spam scanning is always on and cannot be turned off, though automatic sorting into Promotions and Social tabs does stop. The "99% of users have no clue" figure has no source. What remains genuinely uncertain is Google's unverifiable internal training practices and the current default status of its deeper "Personal Intelligence" inbox access feature, which credible reporting described as opt-in.

Why this verdict

A real underlying fact exists: Gmail turned on Gemini AI features by default in January 2026, and smart features have long processed email content. But the post's three most alarming specifics, AI model training on inbox content, advertising profile building from email contents, and spam filtering being bundled into the same toggle, are each directly contradicted by Google's primary documentation or explicit statements, and the "just turned on" framing recycles a November 2025 claim that Google disputed and that the originating security vendor corrected. The post also invents an unsourced "99%" figure and gives incomplete opt-out instructions. Confidence is Medium rather than High because the refutations of the training claim rely on Google's own non-auditable statements, and because the default status of Personal Intelligence as of the post's September 2026 date could not be confirmed against a primary source.
§

Evidence

This post recycles a viral wave that first spread in November 2025 and was publicly disputed by Google at the time. A Google spokesperson told Newsweek: "These reports are misleading, we have not changed anyone's settings, Gmail Smart Features have existed for many years, and we do not use your Gmail content for training our Gemini AI model."

The Verge reported the same statement from Google spokesperson Jenny Thomson.

The originating chain ran through an X post by Dave Jones (@eevblog) and reporting by Malwarebytes, which corrected its original article after Google's statement.

The setting the post tells users to untick is not new. Google announced a dedicated setting for "smart features and personalization" in a blog post roughly six years before this Instagram post, describing it as a control over whether Gmail, Meet and Chat data can be used to offer smart features in those and other Google products, giving tabbed inbox, Smart Compose and Smart Reply as examples.

Google's current help documentation describes smart features as covering automatic email filtering into Primary, Social and Promotions, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards above emails for travel and package tracking, and states that the Gmail, Chat and Meet setting is separate from the Google Workspace smart features setting.

There is a genuine 2026 development the post gestures at. On January 8, 2026, Gmail VP of Product Blake Barnes published a blog post announcing that Gmail is entering the "Gemini era," with AI Overviews summarizing threads and answering questions, plus Help Me Write, Suggested Replies and Proofread.

The Register reported that these features would be on by default but can be disabled, and that Google said it is not going to use personal message text to train its foundational models and performs AI processing in an isolated environment.

On the deeper Gemini inbox access feature, the better sources say it is opt-in. 9to5Google reported that Personal Intelligence, which can pull details from Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Photos, YouTube and Search, is off by default and lets users choose which apps to connect, and that Google says "Gemini doesn't train directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library."

At the global rollout in April 2026, 9to5Google again described Personal Intelligence as "explicitly an opt-in feature," with per-app control at any time.

The Washington Post, covering the same feature, described it as off by default while noting it raises genuine new privacy questions. Lower-quality blogs assert the opposite. One blog claims that on March 11, 2026 Personal Intelligence became available to all US account holders with "No opt-in requirement" and is "on by default."

Another blog covering the same March 2026 expansion states the feature is opt-in. These two low-authority sources contradict each other and the specialist reporting.

On advertising, Google's own policy documentation contradicts the post. Gmail Help states that personalized ad selection in Gmail is fully automated and based on online activity while signed into Google, and explicitly says: "We will not scan or read your Gmail messages to show you ads."

On spam, Google's documentation contradicts the post directly. Google Workspace documentation states that by default Gmail scans all email messages for spam and that "You can't turn off Gmail's spam scanning." Email categorization into Promotions and Social tabs is a smart feature and does stop, but that is inbox sorting, not spam filtering.

Findings

✓ What's accurate 4

  • Gmail did turn on Gemini-powered AI features by default in January 2026, including AI Overviews, Help Me Write, Suggested Replies and Proofread, with an opt-out available. The Register confirmed these were on by default and disableable.
  • Smart features in Gmail are enabled by default for most users and do involve automated processing of message content to power categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply and summary cards. Google's help documentation lists exactly these functions.
  • The "Smart features and personalization" checkbox in Gmail settings under the General tab does exist, and the post's navigation steps for it are broadly correct.
  • Turning these features off does have real costs in convenience, including loss of automatic inbox categorization.

≈ What's misleading 8

  • Temporal and context mismatch: framing a years-old setting as a feature that "just turned on." Google stated that smart features "have existed for many years" and that no settings were changed.
  • Exaggeration and unsupported inference: "that data can be used to train Google's AI models." Google's explicit statement is that it does not use Gmail content to train its Gemini model, and Google separately said it does not use personal message text to train its foundational models.
  • Contradicted by primary source: "it can also be used to create an advertising profile about you." Gmail Help states Google will not scan or read Gmail messages to show ads.
  • Fabricated dependency: "Spam filtering runs on the same system. Switch this off and more junk lands in your inbox. Google gives you no way to keep one without the other." Google documentation states spam scanning is always on and cannot be turned off.
  • Invented precision: "99% of users have no clue" is presented as a statistic with no source. No survey supporting this figure was found.
  • Anthropomorphized agency: "the feature turned itself on" and "nobody asked you first" implies a covert unilateral switch flip that Google denies occurred.
  • Omitted qualifier: the instructions cover one of two settings locations, so a user following the post may believe they have fully opted out when they have not.
  • Conflation: the post merges three distinct things, legacy smart features, the January 2026 default-on AI writing and summary tools, and opt-in Personal Intelligence, into a single alleged event.

? What's uncertain 4

  • The exact default state of Personal Intelligence as of late September 2026 could not be resolved. Specialist reporting in April 2026 described it as explicitly opt-in, while a low-authority blog claims it became on by default in March 2026. The credible sources point to opt-in, but the current state was not confirmed with a primary Google source.
  • Whether user prompts and Gemini responses, as distinct from raw inbox content, may be used to improve Google models. One low-authority source raises this distinction, and it was not verified against Google's primary terms within this investigation.
  • Google's internal training practices cannot be independently verified. The refutation rests on Google's own statements and documentation.
  • Whether any Gmail or Gemini default changed specifically in September 2026, near the post's publication date. No such change was found in searching.
