Summary

The study behind this is real. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, with collaborators in Finland, published a peer-reviewed paper in Molecular Therapy in January 2025 describing an experimental chewing gum made from lablab bean powder. The bean naturally contains a protein called FRIL that grabs onto sugar structures found on the surface of many viruses. In laboratory tests, the gum reduced measurable levels of two influenza A strains and both herpes simplex viruses by roughly 90 to 95 percent, and earlier work showed activity against SARS-CoV-2. Two important caveats: the protein traps and clumps viruses rather than killing them, and all of this was done in test tubes and in a mechanical chewing machine using artificial saliva, not in the mouths of real people. Also, the frequently quoted 95 percent figure for COVID came from a related but different gum made from engineered lettuce, and the planned human trial for that product is listed on the government registry as withdrawn and never opened. So the technology is promising and legitimately published, but it has not been shown to prevent or treat flu, COVID, or herpes in actual use.

Why this verdict

The underlying research is genuine, peer-reviewed, and closely matches the topic of the claim, and the primary paper was located and read. The distortion is in the verbs and the setting: "kills viruses in the mouth" converts laboratory trapping assays and a mechanical chewing simulator into a demonstrated effect in human mouths, and it silently merges SARS-CoV-2 results from a different lettuce-based gum with the lablab bean results. Confidence is high because the primary study, the earlier related study, and the trial registry record were all directly retrieved. Notably, the post's own caption is substantially more accurate than the headline claim, correctly labeling the technology experimental and unproven for preventing or curing disease.

Evidence

The underlying research is real, published in a peer-reviewed journal, and matches the general shape of the claim. Henry Daniell and collaborators tested the ability of a chewing gum made from lablab beans, Lablab purpureus, which naturally contain an antiviral trap protein (FRIL), to neutralize two herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and two influenza A strains (H1N1 and H3N2).

They demonstrated that 40 milligrams of a two-gram bean gum tablet was adequate to reduce viral loads by more than 95%, a reduction similar to what they saw in their SARS-CoV-2 study.

The mechanism is physical trapping rather than killing. Bean gum extracts trapped HSV-1/HSV-2 75 to 94% in a dose-dependent manner through virus self-aggregation.

Purified FRIL protein at greater than 10 micrograms per milliliter neutralized more than 90% of influenza H1N1 and 95% of H3N2, while the bean gum required 40.77 milligrams per milliliter containing 36 to 38 micrograms per milliliter of FRIL to achieve similar neutralization . Bean gum also neutralized more than 95% of HSV-1 at 148 micrograms per milliliter of FRIL, compared with 68.52 micrograms per milliliter of FRIL against HSV-2.

For SARS-CoV-2, the strongest results came from an earlier, related but different gum. In omicron nasopharyngeal samples, microbubble counts were significantly reduced by 20 micrograms of FRIL and by 0.925 micrograms of CTB-ACE2, and among 20 delta or omicron nasopharyngeal samples, 17 had viral load reduced below the detection level of spike protein after incubation with the CTB-ACE2 gum powder.

A dose-dependent 50% plaque reduction against influenza H1N1, H3N2, and coronavirus HCoV-OC43 was observed with purified FRIL, lablab bean powder, or gum. The widely quoted "more than 95% against SARS-CoV-2" figure attaches to the CTB-ACE2 gum, which is made from lettuce engineered to produce ACE2, not from lablab beans: CTB-ACE2 chewing gum was able to markedly debulk SARS-CoV-2 (greater than 95%) in COVID-19 patient saliva or swab samples, consistent across beta, delta, and omicron variants.

  • Virus substitution: the headline groups SARS-CoV-2 with the flu and herpes results as if all came from the lablab bean gum. The most cited SARS-CoV-2 figure of greater than 95% came from the CTB-ACE2 lettuce-based gum, a related but different product from the same lab.
  • Temporal and status overreach in the press cycle: institutional and media coverage described the approach as already in clinical trial, while the registry shows the trial was withdrawn and never opened. Readers would reasonably infer human testing was underway.
  • Omitted qualifier on herpes: the herpes result is a laboratory virus-neutralization result. It says nothing about preventing outbreaks, treating cold sores, or reducing transmission between people.
