The most recent and most directly matching paper is Munro et al., published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on 10 February 2026. It pooled 63 studies comprising 81 meta-analyses, 1,079 component studies and 79,551 participants, and reported that exercise reduced depression (SMD = -0.61, 95% CI -0.69 to -0.54) and anxiety (SMD = -0.47, 95% CI -0.59 to -0.36) symptoms, with aerobic exercise demonstrating the most substantial impact on both .

The four modalities named in the post map closely onto that paper's categories. Per the BMJ Group release, exercise interventions for depression were categorised as aerobic (19 pooled analyses); resistance, such as strength training (8); mind-body, such as yoga, tai-chi and qigong (16); or mixed (39), and for anxiety as aerobic (7), resistance (1), mind-body (9) or mixed (13) . An earlier BJSM paper, Singh et al. 2023, reached compatible conclusions: physical activity had medium effects on depression (median effect size -0.43), anxiety (median -0.42) and psychological distress (-0.60) compared with usual care across all populations .
