There really is a 1960 scientific paper titled "Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026," published in the journal Science by Heinz von Foerster and two colleagues at the University of Illinois. But it was never a prediction that the world would end. It fitted a curve to about 2,000 years of population estimates and noted that, if growth kept accelerating in the same way, the math would blow up to infinity on that date. Von Foerster told TIME in 1960 that he did not actually believe this, and his own university calls the formula tongue-in-cheek. The date is simply his birthday, and it happened to fall on a Friday the 13th. The trend the model relied on ended long ago: global population growth has been slowing for decades, the UN projects a peak of about 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s followed by decline, and a 2025 peer-reviewed study found the predicted singularity turns into a peak rather than an infinity. What remains unknown here is only what the rest of the Instagram post says after the cover slide, since its caption hints it may go on to explain the misunderstanding.

The paper is real and the date in the claim is real. The 1960 Science article is literally titled "Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026," by Heinz Von Foerster, Patricia M. Mora and Lawrence W. Amiot, Science, New Series, Vol. 132, No. 3436 (Nov. 4, 1960), pp. 1291-1295 .
What the paper actually argued is narrower than "the world will end." Von Foerster wrote that at this date human population will approach infinity if it grows as it has in the last two millennia, and expressed hope that at some point something would happen to stop what he called an ever-faster race to self-destruction. The mechanism described was crowding, not planetary destruction: he wrote that "our great-great-grandchildren will not starve, they will be squeezed to death," and identified the cause as "infinite" overpopulation.
The author himself said he did not believe it. In a contemporaneous 1960 TIME interview, von Foerster did not really believe the human race would breed itself to universe-filling infinity in 66 years; he used the equation to illustrate in an attention-getting way that any population increasing at an accelerating rate is headed for trouble. His own university describes it as a joke with a point: he is "perhaps still best remembered for his tongue-in-cheek 'doomsday formula'," a 1960 model projecting that by Nov. 13, 2026, his own birthday, the world's population would reach infinity with everyone "squeezed to death." Von Foerster was born November 13, 1911 in Vienna and died October 2, 2002 , so the "doomsday" date is simply his 115th birthday.
The mathematics is a singularity, not an event. In the model the population approaches infinity, but population growth will not actually become infinite; this is a mathematical singularity, the point at which an equation breaks down, and it was meant more metaphorically than it has sometimes been interpreted.
The prediction was based on extrapolating doubling-time into the future, with doubling-time decreasing to zero on that date.
The extrapolation has since been empirically falsified. A 2025 peer-reviewed re-analysis using data from 10,000 BCE to 2023 CE finds that human population cannot become literally infinite, so the extrapolated singularity is avoided in close proximity and transforms into a peak in human population around 2030, after which world population is expected to decrease . Official demographic projections agree that growth is decelerating, not exploding: the UN's World Population Prospects 2024 projects world population to grow from 8.2 billion in 2024 to a peak of around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, then return to around 10.2 billion by 2100 . Real-world numbers match the deceleration: there are currently about 8.3 billion people, up from 3.02 billion in 1960, but global population growth has decreased significantly, which demographers attribute to declining birth rates, improved education and family planning.
The paper was also contested almost immediately. Critics argued that biological constraints, specifically the human gestation period, and the historical tendency for exponential growth to plateau made the theory improbable, and in 1961 demographic researcher Ansley J. Coale submitted a letter in response.
