On carbohydrate before lifting: The 2022 Sports Medicine meta-analysis examined whether acute carbohydrate ingestion improves resistance training performance and noted that results in the literature had been equivocal. The updated analysis from the same group concluded that acute carbohydrate ingestion has "a small but robust, high certainty ergogenic effect on total session volume," with subgroup signals suggesting larger benefits in sessions longer than 45 minutes and after a fast of 8 hours or more, though those interaction tests were not statistically significant. The measured outcome is total session volume, meaning total work completed, not maximal load.
On bananas specifically: The Nieman metabolomics trial compared bananas against a 6% carbohydrate drink during 75-km cycling time trials in 14 trained cyclists. This is an endurance protocol comparing banana to another carbohydrate source. It does not test bananas against no food, and it does not involve resistance training.
On sodium: Pre-exercise salt and fluid loading does expand plasma volume.
