Summary

There is a real study behind this, but it does not say what the post says. A 2002 study in the Journal of Dermatology had 38 people apply either raw onion juice or tap water to their scalps twice daily for two months, and about 87 percent of the onion group showed some hair regrowth versus 13 percent of the tap water group. The catch is that everyone in that study had alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes patchy bald spots, not male pattern baldness, which is caused by genetics and hormones and works completely differently. The study did include more men than women and men responded better, and that sex difference appears to have been misread into a claim about male pattern baldness. The trial was also small, was not blinded, used plain water rather than a proper placebo, included young children, and has not been replicated in over twenty years. Dermatologists say the current evidence supports onion juice only for alopecia areata and that there is no proof it treats pattern baldness. The post is also an advertisement asking people to comment for a product, so treat the science framing with caution.

Why this verdict

The underlying study is real, retrievable, and its eight-week timeframe and strong regrowth percentages are accurately echoed. However, the study population was patients with patchy alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition, and the post transfers that result to male pattern baldness, a different disease with a different cause. Multiple dermatology sources state explicitly that the evidence supports onion juice only for alopecia areata and not for pattern hair loss. The "even in male pattern baldness" element, which is the post's headline selling point, is not supported by any source found, and the claim is further inflated by omitting the study's small size, lack of blinding, and absence of replication.

Evidence

There is one real, frequently cited human study behind this claim, and it is not about male pattern baldness. The 2002 study was designed to test the effectiveness of topical crude onion juice in the treatment of patchy alopecia areata in comparison with tap water; the first group (onion juice) consisted of 23 patients, 16 males and 7 females, aged 5 to 42, and the control group (tap water) consisted of 15 patients aged 3 to 35.

Both groups applied the treatment twice daily for two months, and re-growth of terminal coarse hairs started after two weeks of treatment with crude onion juice.

At four weeks, hair re-growth was seen in 17 patients (73.9%), and at six weeks in 20 patients (86.9%), significantly higher among males (93.7%) than females (71.4%); in the tap-water control group, re-growth was apparent in only 2 patients (13%) at 8 weeks.

The authors concluded that crude onion juice gave significantly higher hair re-growth results than tap water and can be an effective topical therapy for patchy alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata is a different condition from male pattern baldness. Current evidence only supports onion juice as a potential treatment for alopecia areata, not for other forms of hair loss.

Dermatologist Brendan Camp notes the 2002 study compared onion juice to tap water in patients with alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes patchy bald spots.
