Spotted lanternfly is an invasive planthopper first detected in Pennsylvania in September 2014 and believed to have arrived as eggs attached to a shipment of stone from Asia. Cornell's IPM program adds a timing nuance: the insect is thought to have arrived as egg masses on a stone shipment in 2012, with that first infestation found in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 2014 in a wooded area of Ailanthus altissima, or tree of heaven.
On spread, the federal agency lists a range wider than the post describes. USDA APHIS states that spotted lanternfly populations are in 19 states and the District of Columbia, including Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, with several states maintaining quarantine areas. Midwestern expansion is recent and ongoing: Ohio issued a statewide quarantine effective February 17, 2026, having previously quarantined 18 counties , and the pest has moved west into states such as Illinois, which detected its first spotted lanternfly in 2025 .
On the half-billion figure, the origin is a single 2019 Pennsylvania modeling study. Penn State economists found that if not contained, the spotted lanternfly potentially could drain Pennsylvania's economy of at least $324 million annually and cause the loss of about 2,800 jobs, and that under a worst-case scenario, in which damage reaches the maximum projected by crop-production and forestry experts, these losses could increase to $554 million annually and almost 5,000 jobs. The same study measured then-current damage as far smaller: the report placed current economic damages due to the pest at $50.1 million per year with a loss of 484 jobs in the southeastern part of the state.
