The study cited in this post is real. A 2014 Korean randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 76 men with mild to moderate male pattern hair loss did report a 40 percent increase in hair count after 24 weeks, compared with a 10 percent increase in the placebo group, plus better ratings of scalp photographs by a blinded assessor. But the capsules were not pumpkin seed oil on its own. They were a branded product called Octa Sabal Plus that also contained octacosanol, evening primrose, corn silk, tomato and red clover powders, so the result cannot be credited to pumpkin seed oil specifically. The post also says participants had "40% greater hair count than those taking a placebo," which is not what the paper found. Both groups improved from their own baseline, by 40 percent and 10 percent respectively, so the gap between the groups is smaller than the wording suggests. The post leaves out that the trial was funded by the supplement's manufacturer, that hair thickness did not improve more in the treatment group, and that the finding has never been replicated in a large independent trial. One of the four listed references could not be found at all. Pumpkin seed oil is not proven ineffective, but the evidence is one small industry-funded study of a mixed-ingredient supplement, which is much weaker than the post implies.

The cited study is real, correctly attributed, and correctly dated. Pumpkin seed oil has been shown to block the action of 5-alpha reductase and to have antiandrogenic effects on rats. This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study was designed to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of PSO for treatment of hair growth in male patients with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia.
76 male patients with AGA received 400 mg of PSO per day or a placebo for 24 weeks. Change over time in scalp hair growth was evaluated by four outcomes: assessment of standardized clinical photographs by a blinded investigator; patient self-assessment scores; scalp hair thickness; and scalp hair counts. After 24 weeks of treatment, self-rated improvement score and self-rated satisfaction scores in the PSO-treated group were higher than in the placebo group (P = 0.013, 0.003). The PSO-treated group had more hair after treatment than at baseline, compared to the placebo group (P < 0.001). Mean hair count increases of 40% were observed in PSO-treated men at 24 weeks, whereas increases of 10% were observed in placebo-treated men.
The critical detail the post omits: the capsules were not plain pumpkin seed oil. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the intervention group (n = 37), members of which received 400 mg of PSO (Octa Sabal Plus®) per day in the form of capsules, or the control group (n = 39) . A dermatology reference text states plainly: In a clinical study of 76 men with AGA treated with a supplement containing 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil, hair counts were significantly improved at 12 and 24 weeks compared with placebo, but hair diameters improved in both the treated and placebo groups. However, the product used (Octa Sabal Plus) also contains mixed vegetable powder, octacosanol, corn silk, evening primrose powder, tomato powder, and red clover powder , so the contribution of pumpkin seed oil specifically cannot be isolated. Independent analysts note the same: The supplement given to participants was Octa-Sabal Plus. This does contain pumpkin seed powder but also additional ingredients. These include Octacosanol (from vegetable powder), Gamma-linolenic acid (from evening primrose), and Lycopene (from tomato powder). It is not possible to say whether the PSO was solely responsible for the results, or if the other ingredients also played a role.
Funding is also relevant and unstated in the post: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interests. This study was supported by a grant from Dreamplus Co., Ltd. (2012) , the company associated with the Octa Sabal Plus product.
A published comment in the same journal raised methodological concerns: Cho et al., in 2014, represent in their research that pumpkin seed oil can open a new era in AA treatment. Though the primary results shown by them are quite promising, there are many questions left unanswered.
Independent high-quality review context: In this systematic review of 30 studies of nutritional interventions, the highest-quality evidence suggests the potential effectiveness of Viviscal, Nourkrin, Nutrafol, Lamdapil, Pantogar, Capsaicin and isoflavone, omega 3 and 6 with antioxidants, apple nutraceutical, total glucosides of paeony and compound glycyrrhizin tablets, zinc, tocotrienol, and pumpkin seed oil. The findings of this systematic review indicate that nutritional interventions may benefit select patients with hair loss , with the authors stressing shared decision-making given limited federal oversight of these products.

The study reports a 40% within-group increase from baseline in the treatment arm versus a 10% within-group increase in the placebo arm. The between-group gap is roughly 30 percentage points of relative change, not 40%. The post's phrasing inflates the placebo-adjusted effect.

- Whether pumpkin seed oil alone, at 400 mg/day, produces any hair count benefit. No adequately powered trial of the isolated ingredient in men has been identified.
- Whether oral pumpkin seed oil measurably inhibits 5-alpha reductase in humans. The trial did not measure serum DHT or testosterone, which is precisely one of the gaps the published comment raised. The 5-AR mechanism rests on rodent data, as the paper's own abstract states.
- Effects beyond 24 weeks, and whether any gain is maintained.
- Applicability to women. A separate comparative trial of pumpkin seed oil against 5% minoxidil foam in female pattern hair loss exists (Ibrahim et al., 2021), but it was not independently retrieved and evaluated in this investigation, so no weight is placed on it here.
