Why this verdict

Four of the five myth corrections align with the direction of the published evidence, and two of them (spot reduction, meal skipping) are supported by meta-analyses and randomized trials that were directly retrieved. Evidence

Sub-claim 4, "crunches won't burn belly fat," is the best supported. A systematic review with meta-analysis of unilateral limb training found a pooled effect size of -0.03 (95% CI -0.10 to 0.05, p = 0.508) across 37 comparisons, with the authors concluding that localized training had no effect on local fat depots "regardless of the characteristics of the population and of the exercise program." Vispute et al. randomized 24 sedentary adults to six weeks of seven abdominal exercises, five days per week, on an isocaloric diet, and reported no significant effect on body fat percentage, android fat, abdominal circumference, or abdominal skinfolds. The University of Sydney separately describes a 12-week randomized trial in which adding an abdominal resistance program to diet change produced no greater belly fat reduction than diet alone.

Sub-claim 5, "skipping meals won't speed up weight loss," is broadly supported. A meta-analysis of 11 RCTs and the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations scoping review both found that intermittent energy restriction produced weight loss but was not superior to continuous energy restriction. A 2022 meta-analysis found a small statistical advantage for intermittent fasting on body weight (SMD -0.21, 95% CI -0.40 to -0.02), and an independent summary of a similar analysis described such differences as small and potentially clinically meaningless.

Sub-claim 2, "cardio is best for fat loss" as a myth, is where the evidence diverges from the post. The 2025 meta-analysis comparing training modes concluded there were no differences in percent body fat loss between modes, but that aerobic training and concurrent training were more effective than resistance training alone at reducing absolute fat mass, with resistance training neither improving nor impeding fat loss when added to concurrent training.

Sub-claim 3, "strength training won't bulk you up," was not resolvable against high-quality primary evidence because the claim is not quantified. A 20-week controlled trial in middle-aged women found significant strength gains in all groups but hypertrophy only in pre-menopausal participants, with the authors suggesting post-menopausal women likely require larger volumes (more than 6 to 8 sets per muscle per week) to change body composition. Estimates of first-year lean mass gain in women circulating in secondary fitness sources (roughly 1.5 kg over 15 weeks, or 3 to 7 lb in a year) could not be traced to a primary source and should not be treated as verified.

Sub-claim 1, "no pain, no gain," could not be traced to a strong retrieved primary source within this investigation. Tertiary and secondary sources state that expert opinion generally regards the slogan as ineffective and that delayed onset muscle soreness is not required to indicate an effective session. Background from training data, labeled as such and not retrieved here: the research literature (for example work by Damas and colleagues on muscle damage and protein synthesis, and by Nosaka on soreness) indicates soreness is a poor proxy for muscle damage or growth. This is offered as context, not as a verified source.

On the post's positive prescriptions: an RCT on overload progression concluded muscle growth "appears to be more pronounced when resistance exercise is progressively overloaded," while also noting that training without overload progression was still sufficient to induce hypertrophy in young untrained women.

  • Abdominal exercises alone do not preferentially reduce abdominal fat. This is supported by a meta-analysis, at least two randomized trials, and university-level expert commentary.
  • Skipping meals or compressing eating windows is not a superior weight loss strategy compared with ordinary continuous calorie reduction. Multiple meta-analyses and a nutrition guideline review agree, with any differences being small.
  • Resistance training does not rapidly or dramatically increase body size in typical trainees. Trial evidence shows strength gains occur readily while measurable hypertrophy is slower, volume-dependent, and in some populations absent over 20 weeks.
  • Progressive overload is a genuine, evidence-supported driver of hypertrophy magnitude.
  • Soreness and pain are not accepted markers of training effectiveness in mainstream expert guidance.
