The "100 mg per day for 8 weeks" hair-density finding actually comes from a different, small pilot study (Grothe 2020) in only 21 volunteers, without a placebo group, authored by scientists affiliated with the company that sells the branded ingredient (AnaGain™ Nu). The study aims to investigate the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of pea sprout extract in promoting hair growth. In vitro experiments were conducted using human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) and RAW 264.7 macrophage cells alongside an in vivo study in C57BL/6 mice. It does not itself measure hair density in humans; it references an earlier trial for that outcome: a previous randomized clinical trial reveals that daily administration of 100mg of pea sprout extract for 8 weeks significantly increased hair density in patients, however, the underlying mechanisms remained unclear.
That earlier human trial is Grothe et al. 2020. It was a small pilot involving 21 volunteers taking the branded ingredient AnaGain™ Nu. The daily intake of 100 mg pea sprout extract (AnaGain™ Nu) for 8 weeks significantly reduced hair loss already after 28 days of treatment (p < 0.002). No adverse events were reported. Trade coverage from the manufacturer describes the outcomes as: after taking 100mg of AnaGain Nu, number of fallen hair had significantly reduced after 28 days, scalp photographs showed visible improvement of hair density after 56 days, satisfaction level of results was highly rated by study participants. The Grothe authors themselves noted that placebo-controlled interventions with a larger population size and longer study duration are still needed.
The mechanisms listed in the Instagram post are drawn from the Kim 2025 mouse/cell work, not from human data.
